I love shopping, and I love shopping even more when I know I’m getting a bargain. I almost never make a purchase until I’ve researched and double checked prices online, and in doing so, I’ve come across a website called Ebates. I became an Ebates member last year and since then have received almost $200 back to my PayPal account. At first I was skeptical about the whole thing, but I definitely got the money back, and I have a “free” Ellevill Lemongrass Woven Wrap to prove it (tee hee).
If you haven’t heard of Ebates, this is how it works:
1. Sign up for an account on the Ebates website.
2. Use the links through their sites to open up “portals” to other web retailers (eg: Amazon, Indigo, etc.)
3. When you make a purchase, a percentage of your subtotal (depending on the store) is credited back to your account
4. Ebates does a payout every 3 months, and you can choose to receive your money back by cheque or by PayPal.
5. Make it rain.
Now most of the stores affiliated with the site are sensible with their cash back offers, being something between 1-5%. But there’s one store in particular that caught my eye last year: SHOP.CA. They were offering 20% back, and they sold real and useful items from well known brands. They also offered free shipping and had an amazing 365 day return policy. When I ordered, my items arrived within 5 days even during the busy holiday season. I’m not sure if my timing was in conjunction with a big marketing campaign, but I also received a bunch of “here’s a free $10 gift card for your next purchase” promotions that I was able to take advantage of. Anyways, my point is, I liked the site. Unfortunately, after the Christmas season ended, a 20% cash back offer was nowhere to be found. It sat dormant at around 2-3.5%, occasionally going up to 5% during a few of Ebates’ “double cash back” promotions. I figured they cut the 20% after gaining in popularity after that *big marketing campaign* I noticed.
In any case, it turns out that a lot of the baby products on the site are coming from Snugglebugz which is a very popular baby retailer in Canada. I received an email from Snugglebugz saying that the Diono Radian RXT (the very car seat I was planning to buy eventually) would be going on sale for 15% off. I checked Ebates and noticed that Shop.Ca was doing a return of 7.5% cash back. Oooh, that could be a good deal, I thought to myself, but it didn’t motivate me enough to add to cart.
BUT THEN! For some reason, I checked a few days later and saw that Shop.ca was offering 15% back on all purchases. This is when the timing is just right, and I get my Extreme Couponing on even though I live in Canada and thus am not privy to any such adrenaline inducing opportunities. Here comes the math, y’all:
Regular Price of Diono Radian RXT: $379.99
Sale Price: $305.99
Random unexpected PayPal discount that I received for being a shop.ca member and using PayPal: $20
Actual amount charged to PayPal (includes 13% sales tax): $325.77
Ebates credit (15% of subtotal): $45.90
Final price of Diono Radian RXT including sales tax: $279.87.
Whooo! I should be on TLC. If I learned anything from Extreme Couponing, it’s that you gotta wait for the right moment to pounce on a deal. I know Sweet Pea is only 6 months old and still enjoying her bucket car seat, but she is in the 97th percentile for height and I just know that with my luck, the moment she outgrows it the RXT will be sitting on the shelf, patronizing me with its regular price sticker at which point it will come to $429.39 with tax. (Yikes, that’s the first time I calculated that number! What a difference!) Not only that, but I earned over 4000 Aeroplan miles through another bonus offer which is a sweet plus since we use those all the time.
Right now, history is repeating itself. Obviously the Diono sale is over, but Ebates is again offering 20% cash back at Shop.ca! This is awesome for early Christmas shopping! If you’re looking for something, I highly recommend checking them out. From Applecheeks diapers, to Hunter boots to Samsung refrigerators. Seriously, it’ll surprise you.
If I’ve opened your eyes to the wonderful world of cash back rebates, and you would like to sign up for either of these sites, it would really help me out if you used my referral links! It is at no cost to you, but I get credit for pointing you in their direction. Sweet Pea and I would really appreciate it!
