My 3 Summer Must Haves!

The amazing weather we’ve been having lately has made me come to terms with a bittersweet realization: in a couple of years’ time, we’ll be part of the “summer vacationers.” Here’s what I mean:
In just 2 more years, Sweet Pea will be entering junior kindergarten (O.M.G.) and she’ll be part of the academic schedule. This means that family vacations are limited to summer break, March break, Christmas break… pretty much only when school is out for more than 4 days at a time.
This is new territory for me! All my working life I’ve been able to take advantage of off peak crowds, off peak pricing – I even used to schedule my “weekends” for Wednesday and Thursday so that I wouldn’t have to run my errands on the real weekends. (Costco on a Saturday. Enough said.)
Now I’m wondering if it’s because I really did have that much freedom, or was that just life pre-baby??
We’re actually going to a destination wedding in the fall, and I’m revelling in the fact that this is not yet a scheduling issue. But coming to terms with this little time crunch makes me realize how important it is to really make the most of every moment we have together! (sob, sob, sob.) So I’ve been extra gung-ho in making sure that each week contains a few really cool experiences that not only rock Sweet Pea’s world, but also ensures that she falls FAST asleep when it’s bedtime. (This may or may not be for selfish reasons :D)
With all of these outings, I’ve found myself with a few key items that have made the list of my 3 Summer Must Haves!
Stainless Steel Water Bottle
With the weather being so hot all the time, I just can’t stand drinking lukewarm water that should have been cold. I bought myself a Bubba insulated travel mug and use that for drinking cold, refreshing water all. the. time. It’s so necessary on day trips, because just leaving a regular bottle in the car would warm it up in minutes. It also cuts down on plastic waste and the need to use a cooler to keep drinks cold. For Sweet Pea, I got the Funtainer Stainless Steel Water Bottle because it has a sippy straw and is easy to use. It keeps her water cold for hours and doesn’t get all “greenhousey” in the car. The only downside is that it leaks through the straw if it’s tipped over, so it’s definitely not something to have rolling around in the bottom of a backpack.
Many days we’ve unexpectedly ended up at the beach or the splash pad and Sweet Pea decides: “Oh, I think I’m just gonna get ALL my clothes wet.” I learned early on to always have a set of spare clothes handy, but I never thought to have a towel on hand. When you bring towels to the beach they’ll always get sand stuck in those little loops, and wet towels drying in the car is just a little gross.
One day when I knew we’d be going to the splash pad at the zoo, I got a little bummed thinking about a beach towel taking up all the precious space in my backpack. So I went out and bought a travel towel. Best idea, ever! This took up no space at all, dried Sweet Pea and itself in no time, and comes with its own stuff sack. It also came in really handy the other day when a sand-castle build at the lake went rogue, and Sweet Pea came out of it with wet everything. I miraculously had this towel in my purse and it was that moment when I said: “I am taking this thing with me everywhere.”
This one from Fox Outfitters comes in 3 colours and 5 different sizes.
Schick Intuition Razor
I know this doesn’t sound like something to bring onto excursions, but it’s definitely something that has been a staple in my summer escapades. I’ve been using the Intuition during every shower and I’m so happy to say that my legs always look amazingly smooth.
“Duh, Heather, you’re shaving your legs… why wouldn’t they look smooth?”
Because previously, whenever I shaved my legs and then also shaved the next day, it still looked stubbly, even though I just had a go with the razor. My hair is darker than my skin so naturally, it was visible and made me feel a little self conscious. (Yeah, I know, whatever… it’s my thing.) But when I started using the Intuition, my legs always look like the “new shave” verses the “next day shave.” (Is this even a problem for anyone else? Am I alone, here?) I can only guess that this is because of the built-in skin conditioning solid that eliminates the need for shave gel and moisturizes after the blade does its thang.
30+ degree celsius weather with the humidex means I am wearing shorts every second of the day, and I want my leg game on point. Luckily, Shoppers Drug Mart has paired up with Schick and Aveeno to give you a 3 step process to Summer Legs You’ll Love!
